Pumped Storage Power Plant Center
Pumped Storage Power Plant Center

Construction for the Sancheong Pumped Storage Power Plant Center began in February 1995 and it was completed in November 2001.

Pumped storage power plants provide a type of hydroelectric generation. During nocturnal hours when power consumption levels are low, the remaining surplus power is used to pump and store water from the lower dam in the upper dam at a higher altitude; later, during times of the day when power consumption peaks, the water is released from the upper dam back into the lower dam to generate electricity.

The upper dam is located in Naedae-ri of Sicheon-myeon: the height of the dam is 91m and its length is 360m. The lower dam is located in Bancheon-ri in Sicheon-myeon, and has a height of 71m and a length of 286m. The facilities are comprised of the upper and lower reservoirs and dams and the underground power plant; the total height of the drop is 427m. The underground power plant is equipped with the full range of state-of-the-art generating facilities and mechanical devices. It was the first in Korea to apply a concrete face rock fill dam technique, which reduced the construction cost by 30% compared to conventional dams.

During the construction, the plant was awarded for excellence in environmental management. The plant anticipates the rapid growth in demand for electrical power in Gyeongsangnam-do while promoting stability in the power supply.
